Islamabad:November 03:A series of public art exhibitions titled ‘opening lines’ has travelled to Iqra University in a diverse display on Wednesday offering a new visual vocabulary in an effort to transform the mundane environment into an alternative interdisciplinary art space.
The works of the 51 participating artists, who have volunteered to take part in this series of exhibitions have also been documented in a catalogue. The first display of this public exhibition was held at the National Library of Pakistan in April followed by Islamabad Stock Exchange, National University of Science and technology (NUST), Mashall School for underprivileged children in May, and finally concluding at Iqra University opening on November 2nd. These exhibitions are primarily for people, who already come to these places on a daily basis.
According to the organisers, the purpose of this series of exhibitions was to engage the educated audience of Pakistan in a public setting outside the commercial gallery space. They will educate the public in arts and develop its own visual vocabulary. The artworks on display occupy the space already inhabited by public, such as public buildings and educational institutions. As a unique and innovative project for the first time in Pakistan, artists are exhibiting their artworks in the form of a travelling exhibition going to different public spaces. These are non-commercial, self-funded, voluntary exhibitions, as no sales would be made through these exhibitions. The primary focus of these exhibitions were public buildings, schools, colleges and universities to highlight the need to expose students in educational institutes to the visual arts at an early age in order to develop their aesthetic sensibilities.
These exhibitions would go a long way in developing an interest in art among the younger generations of Pakistan who need to find better avenues to direct their energies, occupy their time and express themselves.
