ISLAMABAD, Oct 13: The four-day regional round of the 7th Dawn in Education Spelling Bee competition begins here on Thursday, in which students of 150 schools of Northern Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa would compete.
Thousands of schoolchildren are divided in three age groups with the youngest students in the category of 9-11, followed by students in 12-14 years age group and the third one in 15-17 years age group.
Around 7,000 students between 9 and 17 years belonging to 720 schools from all over the country are participating in the 7th Dawn in Education National Spelling Bee Competition 2011, which is being held in partnership with the US Embassy in five regions of the country.
Spelling Bees have existed for the last 150 years in various forms across the world, but in the country the concept was initiated by Dawn with the launch of annual Spelling Bee competition in 2004.
It provides an opportunity for students to improve and advance the skills associated with good spelling habits and also to expand vocabulary and encourage accurate word usage and pronunciation.
The contests help the participants groom themselves in handling pressure. It serves as a commendable educational venture whereby the community interacts and shares a healthy spirit of learning. The national championship is scheduled to be held on November 1 in Islamabad, where regional champions of the three age groups from Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad will compete.Dawn.
