Islamabad:The teachers protest and boycott of classes continued here on Wednesday as relevant authorities have failed to address their demands resulting in academic loss of students.
Around 200 teachers, under the banner of the Federal Government College Teachers Association (FGCTA), staged a protest demonstration at the Parade Avenue on Wednesday and raised slogans against the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) and Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD).
Teachers claimed that it was actually the CADD, which was creating bureaucratic hurdles in the upgradation of teachers.
Teachers ruled out the impression that the summary regarding time-scale upgradation was moved forward with the consent of teachers. They said that the prime minister s directive clearly mentions that the teachers working under the FDE should be upgraded with effect from January 1, 2011.
The protesters alleged that the CADD was busy in propaganda against teachers by spreading baseless rumours against them. We know that the CADD is adopting different tactics to halt the process of upgradation, said a teacher.
Teachers, during the protest, said that they had been struggling and raising voice for their upgradation ever since they were assured by former prime minister Shaukat Aziz on World Teachers Day on October 5, 2006. Then the same announcement has been reiterated on November 8, 2010, in an extraordinary gathering, but we are still fighting for our rights, they said.
They said that the teachers working in Grade 16 and above never got upgradation, as per the directives of the prime minister. The teachers believe that they have been given only false assurances whenever they demanded their upgradation, but now they would not sit quietly.
Talking to this scribe, FGCTA President Professor Zahid Ali Shah said that the teachers were forced by the concerned authorities to mark World Teachers Day as black day. The loss which students are suffering due to boycott of classes by the teachers is because of the officials who are placing hurdles in the implementation of prime minister s directive regarding upgradation. Those officials certainly deserve punishment, he said.
He said that they have been literally running from pillar to post for the last five years, but to no avail. Now we have decided that we will not end our boycott of classes till the acceptance of our demand, he added.
Addressing the protesters, Syeda Tanvir Zehra said that teachers are now determined to get their right and nobody could stop them from achieving it. We have kept silence for decades, but now we would not remain silent. We are least bothered about the fact that we have to spend our time in the open in extreme weather conditions. All we are bothered about is our upgradation, she said.
FGCTA General Secretary Tahir Mahmood said it was a pity that the nation-builders are being compelled to come out on roads to get their genuine demand of upgradation implemented. The bureaucracy has been putting off the implementation of the package under one pretext or the other. The college teachers waited patiently throughout the year, but the indifferent attitude of the bureaucracy forced teachers to observe World Teachers Day as black day, he said.
Teachers said that they would not accept time-scale upgradation with one grade upgradation. They said that they would continue their protest until acceptance of their demand. The news.
