Islamabad:One-day training workshop on ‘Open Source Tools and Techniques for Digital Archives’ was organised at Bahria University, says a press release.
More than 25 library professionals participated in this training. The session was started in a simple and a graceful inauguration ceremony. Ata-ur-Rehman, from LI Solutions was the leading trainer, while the other trainers were Sher Afzal, library officer, Bahria University, and M. Shafiq Rana, SECP Islamabad.
After the inauguration, Shafiq Rana gave an impressive presentation on ‘Introduction to digital archives: GSDL, D-Space, E-Prints and Copyright.’ He presented a comparison between different Open Source tools for managing digital archives.
The second session was on ‘Cataloging of digital contents and Metadata’. The lecture was delivered by Sher Afzal. He presented the difference between the cataloging of hard form bibliographic material and digital material, also different types of Metadata, METS, Dublin Core, Qualified Dublin Core and AGLS were the main focus of this presentation. Last two sessions were conducted by Ata-ur-Rehman, Open Source Tools for Digital Contents and Step-by-step guide about how to create digital archive) followed by practical session in which participants got hands-on training about the installation of Open Source Software (GSDL) and its basic configuration. At the end of event, participants also presented their views about this learning activity; professionals found the training very effective and useful.
