Long ago there lived in Carthage a slave called Androcles. His master was very cruel. He could not longer bear his inhuman treatment. One day the slave ran away. As he was passing through a thick forest he heard the loud roars of a lion crying with pain. He was a bit terrified but he decided to help even at the risk of his life. He went up to the lion who held out his paw to him in an imploring way. There was a thorn in it. Androcles put a piece of cloth in the lion's mouth and pulled out the thorn out of his paw. The lion got immediate relief and licked his hands.
A few months later Androcles was caught by the his master's men. His master flew into a rage at the very sight of the slave. He was condemned to be thrown before a hungry lion. When the lion was let out of the cage he made a dash at the slave. But as he drew near he stopped he recollected something and he would not touch him. On the other hand he lay at his feet and licked his hands. It was the same slave who pulled a thorn out of his paw. This so much surprised the master that the set at liberty Androcles and the lion.
