Punjab University Geography students' access to mapping software made possible

VC inaugurates new computer lab equipped with GIS mapping software


LAHORE (Monday, January 26): Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran inaugurated the computer lab comprising 40 computers at the Department of Geography and visited library and class-rooms here at New Campus on Monday.

Department of Geography Chairman Prof Dr Abdul Ghaffar, Prof Dr Tabassam Jamal, Tasneen Kausar, Safdar Ali Sherazi, Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan, faculty members and a large number of the students were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran said Geography Department was of immense importance due to Geographical Information System (GIS) application during this modern era, therefore faculty members and students of the department should focus on education and research activities.

Department Chairman Dr Abdul Ghaffar briefed the vice-chancellor that the facilities of map making and viewing software and internet were available for students in the computer lab and it would help improve the performance of the department. He presented a map of PU New Campus to the vice-chancellor on the occasion. He said it was first time in the history of PU that such detailed map of New Campus has been prepared and it would help guide visitors, teachers and students.

Later the vice-chancellor visited library and class-rooms of the department and talked to the students and faculty members about the facilities being available to them. The other faculty members said that there was another computer lab for PhD scholars and at present eight scholars were doing PhD in the department and 3 scholars were doing their PhDs in the foreign varsities.
