Punjab University Discussion on Women Empowerment in Pakistan
LAHORE (Wednesday, 06):A consultative discussion on Women Empowerment in Pakistan will be held today (Saturday, Feb 7) in the auditorium of Punjab University Institute of Biochemistry & Biotechnology (IBB) at 11:00 am in which Members of Senate Standing Committee on Women Development and Punjab University women faculty members will participate. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran will be the chief guest on the occasion. Chairperson of Senate Standing Committee Tahira Latif and members Razina Alam Khan, Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry, Bibi Yasmeen Shah, Semeen Yousaf Siddiqui, Saeed Ahmad Hashmi, Sardar Mhuahmmad Jamal Khan Laghari, Fauzia Fakhar-uz-Zaman Khan, Rukhsana Zuberi, Kauser Firdaus, Nawab Muhammad Ayaz Khan Jogezai and Sabina Rauf are also included.

A discussion on women’s empowerment  in Pakistan was held at  Punjab University

Cut in funding for education resented

LAHORE  A CONSULTATIVE discussion on women’s empowerment and higher education in Pakistan was held at the auditorium of Punjab University’s Institute of Biochemistry & Biotechnology (IBB) on Saturday.

The members of the Senate Standing Committee on Women Development, headed by committee’s Chairperson Senator Mrs Tahira Latif and Punjab University women faculty members, participated in the discussion. The other members of the committee who were present on the occasion included Senators Razina Alam Khan, Semeen Yousaf Siddiqui, Fauzia Fakhar-uz-Zaman Khan, Rukhsana Zuberi and Dr Kauser Firdaus. Speaking on the occasion, PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran said that at present 225 women teachers were serving the Punjab University and many of them were better than male faculty members.

He said the PU sitting administration was free of gender biases, as the women faculty members were serving all committees of the university but previously almost no representation was being given to female faculty members. He expressed his strong resentment over the cut to the Higher Education Commission’s funding by the federal finance ministry and said that no one cared for Rs 80 billion deficit budget of PIA and, on the other hand, HEC’s highly effective funding had been curtailed due to which whole higher education institutes and universities were suffering badly and development projects had been stopped. He said due to funds’ cut, HEC could not release Rs 22 crore recurring grant to PU due to which university was facing serious financial problems.

Speaking on the occasion, Senator Tahira Latif condemned the incidents of closing and blowing up schools of girls in Swat and said that some people in disguise of Taliban were hatching a conspiracy against Pakistan. She said Islam gives equal opportunities of getting education to men and women and if we really want to progress we have to focus on women’s education.

On behalf of the committee, she announced that the issue of the varsities recurring grant cut from HEC especially for PU, which is the oldest seat of learning in the country, would be taken up with the federal finance minister and Prime Minister.

Senator Dr Kausar Ferduas said the government invested a huge sums on the education of women but many of them did not make practical use of their education due to unsuitable atmosphere at institutions, adding it was a big loss to the national exchequer. She said that enabling environment should be created for women in professional institutions.

A number of PU senior faculty members were also present.
