IGP Peshawar Hopeful about Early Recovery of Kidnapped VC
PESHAWAR: Inspector General Police (IGP) Fiaz Ahmed Khan Toru has expressed the hope that Islamia College University Vice-Chancellor Ajmal Khan would be recovered soon as those arrested in the case have provided valuable clues.
Talking to a TV channel, the IGP said the police acted promptly after the kidnapping of the VC from the Professors Colony on September 7 and arrested two of the kidnappers and some of their accomplices the same day. He said the car in which the VC was kidnapped was recovered and the man who was monitoring the movement and the incident was also taken into custody.
The IGP said those arrested have given some valuable information about the area where Ajmal Khan might possibly be kept. However, he stopped short of sharing the details about the whereabouts of the vice-chancellor, saying that ‘it may spoil the case’. He said the VC was kidnapped from a place that was vulnerable and without a boundary wall. The IGP said that he had proposed that a boundary wall should have been built around the Professors Colony as it was unsafe and could be targetted by the kidnappers and other criminals.
“I also brought the matter into the notice of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani,” he added. About the capacity building of the police to cope with the peculiar security situation in the province, he said the size of the force had been doubled and heavy weaponry provided to the cops to fight the militants.
He said police personnel have rendered numerous sacrifices in the fight against militancy to provide security to masses. “The cities are relatively safe now due to the sacrifices of police,” he said. However, the IGP acknowledged that the force still had capacity limitations and logistic problems, saying that it still had no proper police lines in some places and other facilities.
“More than 6,000 vacancies could not be filled due to the capacity limitations for training purposes,” he added. About the special training to the personnel to fight the terrorists and militants, Fiaz Toru said that an elite force was being built and every year about 300 cops would get special training by the Special Services Group of the army. He urged the people to extend a helping hand to the force in its efforts to purge the society of miscreants and kidnappers. The news
