Tehzeeb Festival kicks off with call for Music Academy
Karachi:June 28:The two-day Tehzeeb Festival and Awards ceremony sponsored by the Tehzeeb Foundation got off to a fine start at a hotel on Thursday evening.
The programme began with poetry recitation and selected readings form the works of noted poets and writers in the country.
The first one to recite his verses was poet Akbar Masoom. He recited three of his poems.
Next was Anwar Maqsood. He recited some of Ghalib’s verses and garnished his performance with humorous comments and witticisms underneath which lay very profound comments on the values and social conditions of the day.
Dr Pirzada Qasim, former vice-chancellor, Karachi University, recited his verses.

 

Then came the noted BBC broadcaster and commentator, Raza Ali Abdi. He narrated his journey from the catchment area of the Indus in Ladakh to the delta area near Karachi and lamented the way the river had run dry at its tail-end.

 

Dr Aslam Farrukhi regretted that there was no proper music academy to groom the tremendous potential and musical talent in the country. It was sad, he said, because was the music was an integral part of a society’s cultural heritage.

 

The second session comprised the award presentation .

 

Dr Aslam Farrukhi and Raza Ali Abdi were presented with the S Abul Khair Kashfi Award; Dr Pirzada Qasim and Akbar Masoom were presented with Shabnam Shakeel Award for poetry; Anwar Maqsood was presented with the Fine Arts and Literature Award; the London-based Naiza Khan with the Fine Arts Award; Ustad Naseeruddin Saami and Ustad Altaf Hussain Tafoo Khan with the Classical Music Award; and banjo player Mumtaz Ali Sabzal with the Folk Music Award.

 

Besides, shields were also presented to the friends of Tehzeeb and participants in the festival. These included musicians Sadiq Hussain(Sitar), Karam Abbas, Rustom Fateh Ali Khan, Ustad Sharif Hussain, and Imdad Hussain (Sitar).

 

The third session comprised musical performances and started off with a Tabla recital by Haroon from Lahore. The artiste sure was a virtuoso. His nimble finger work was a treat to watch.

 

Next came the Baloch folk musician and banjo player Mumtaz Sabzal. In his introduction, Sabzal said, “Baloch music is a vast and rich genre of music” and proved it soon after with his adept performance on the banjo with three Balochi tunes, the first one being a soft, lilting melody, and the other two being highly lively, vivacious ones which had the audience clapping in rhythm.

 

M/S Geo, the Goethe-Institut, Alliance Francais, and Marriot were the media partners.
Anbarin Haseeb, Malahat Awan and Sharif Awan compered the various sessions.The news.
