Punjab University Dept of Literary History of Muslims reactivated

LAHORE: Punjab University Department of Literary History of Muslims of Indo-Pak Subcontinent, which was made dysfunctional since 1972, has been reactivated and retired Dean Faculty of Oriental Learning and Principal Oriental College Prof Dr Khawaja Muhammad Zakriya has been appointed Director of the department. Dr Khawaja Muhammad Zakriya said that re-establishment of the department has been made possible due to special efforts of VC Dr Mujahid Kamran and it would help promote Pakistani languages especially Urdu. He said the objective of the department, launched in the period of Prof Hameed Ahmad Khan, was to pen down the history of languages influenced by Islamic faith and culture so that the history of literature created in Bengali, Sindhi, Pashto, Punjabi and Balochi languages in the sub-continent could be written. He said that there was plan of publications of many books volumes (in all above said languages) and at that time the department published 14 volumes including five of Urdu, three of Persian, two of Bengali and one each of Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi and Balochi. He further said in 1972, the department was closed at the completion of the project. He said Group Captain Fayyaz Mahmood was Director of the department and Chief Editor of the volumes. Dr Khawaja Zakriya said the department has restarted revision of five volumes of Urdu language being having much importance and it would complete its work within two years. Punjab University department reactivated after 37 years

Lahore: Punjab University Department of Literary History of Muslims of Indo-Pak Subcontinent, which was made dysfunctional in 1972, has been reactivated and Prof Dr Khawaja Muhammad Zakriya, retired dean of the Faculty of Oriental Learning and principal of the Oriental College, has been appointed as its director.

According to a press release here on Wednesday, Dr Zakriya said the reestablishment of the department had been made possible due to special efforts of VC Dr Mujahid Kamran and it would help promote Pakistani languages, especially Urdu.
