Punjab University department reactivated after 37 years
Lahore: Punjab University Department of Literary History of Muslims of Indo-Pak Subcontinent, which was made dysfunctional in 1972, has been reactivated and Prof Dr Khawaja Muhammad Zakriya, retired dean of the Faculty of Oriental Learning and principal of the Oriental College, has been appointed as its director.
According to a press release here on Wednesday, Dr Zakriya said the reestablishment of the department had been made possible due to special efforts of VC Dr Mujahid Kamran and it would help promote Pakistani languages, especially Urdu. He said the objective of the department, launched in the period of Prof Hameed Ahmad Khan, was to record the history of languages, influenced by Islamic faith and culture, so that the history of literature created in Bengali, Sindhi, Pashto, Punjabi and Balochi languages could be written. He said there was a plan of publications of many books and at that time the department had published 14 volumes, including five of Urdu, three of Persian, two of Bengali and one each of Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi and Balochi. He said in 1972, the department was closed after the completion of the project, adding that Group Captain Fayyaz Mahmood was the director of the department and chief editor of the volumes.
Dr Zakriya said the department had restarted revision of five volumes of Urdu language and it would complete its work within two years. He said after the completion of work on Urdu, the work on Persian language would started.
