PAK PLOY TECHNIC INSTITUTE LAHORE Students Protest High Fees
LAHORE:A LARGE number of students of a private technical institute on Thursday staged a protest demonstration against the institute’s management for increasing fee and imposing fine.

The protesting students of the Pak Polytechnic Institute (PPI), Allama Iqbal Town, also tried to block the main road, however, the attempt was foiled by the police. The police reportedly resorted to baton-charge to disperse them.

The students had organized the demonstration against the abrupt fee hike and collection of fine over low attendance by the PPI management. They chanted slogans against the management of the institute and demanded withdrawal of decision of increasing the fee of the diploma of associate engineering (DAE) class.

They told the reporters that the institute’s management had increased the DAE fee from Rs 700 to Rs 1,100 while it had also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on each student for low attendance.

They contended the institute was running under a trust therefore increase in fee was not justified.

A student said some policemen baton charged some students near their institute when they were trying to block the road.

Another student however claimed the police proved helpful in conveying protestors’ sentiments to the institute’s management which agreed to withdraw its decision regarding imposition of fine.

When contacted, SP Iqbal Town Ali Rizvi denied the allegations of police baton charge. He said no reserve was called from the lines rather a first response team was there to control the situation.

He, however, said some constables used their sticks by hitting these on ground when students pushed them in a bid to block the road.

He claimed that police proved quite helpful in resolving the issue adding, “We succeeded to resolve 90 percent of the students’ grievances as the college management agreed to withdraw its decision regarding fine”.

“We have also arranged a meeting of

students and the college management for Friday (today),” he concluded. The management of the institute could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
