Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council (PVMC) barred from UVAS degree ads

Lahore: The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MinFAL) has barred the Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council (PVMC) from publishing any advertisements in the press on the issue of BS degree programmes of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore.

According to a statement, in a letter to the PVMC Secretary/Registrar, Animal Husbandry Commissioner (AHC) Dr RH Usmani asked the council not to publish any misleading press advertisements on this issue without getting prior approval of the MinFAL federal secretary.

The BS degree programs in Fisheries and Aquaculture, Dairy Technology and Poultry Science of the UVAS are non-veterinary degree courses and do not required recognition from the PVMC. These degree programmes were launched last year by the chancellor/ Punjab governor in the presence of officials of the Higher Education Commission. The statutory bodies of the university had approved all these programmes before their initiation and they were started on the demand of stakeholders in dairy, fisheries and poultry sectors.

On Secretary instructions, Dr M Afzal, Chief Executive Officer, Livestock and Dairy Development Board, Islamabad, Dr RH Usmani, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences Business Management, UVAS, and Dr Alamdar Hussain Malik, Registrar/ Secretary, PVMC, deliberated on the issue in a meeting in Islamabad last week. The committee could not find any provision in the PVMC Act to give misleading advertisements in the press. When contacted, PVMC Secretary/Registrar Dr Alamdar Hussain Malik said the council promptly responded to the letter received from the AHC office with the stand that PVMC shall definitely respond to any unlawful action of any forum challenging the council's writ, jurisdiction and mandate given by the parliament.
