Call for Educating Every Pakistani Girl
Karachi:July 13: A delegation of 30 schoolgirls met the provincial education minister, Nisar Khuhro, and presented a resolution to him for realising the right of every Pakistani girl to education.
If world leaders, governments, civil society and the global communitydo not take decisive action now, the result is clear; the largestgeneration of youth in human history will be exposed to unemployment, poor health, civil unrest, and increased vulnerability,” says the resolution.
We firmly believe that education is the most effective solution to poverty. We
cannot afford to not educate the future generations of our planet — education is a smart investment.”
The resolution was read out to ministers by schoolgirls in Islamabad, Lahore, Quetta, Peshawar, Muzaffargarh, Gilgit and elsewhere around the world.The meeting was part of a global initiative through which the UN will mark July 12, Malala Yousufzai’s birthday, as Malala Day.
On her 16th birthday, the girl, who was shot at by Taliban in her hometown Swat, will address a delegation of 500 young people in the UN.
“Let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world. Education is the only solution. Education first,” she stated in her first public address after her surgery.
The resolution calls for the passage of a Security Council resolution that recognises the global education crisis and takes concrete steps to address education and security, particularly for girls in emergency situations, get every child in school, address the special situation of girls and other marginalised groups, ensure that we learn toprepare us for life and work, increase education funding and guarantee our voice in shaping education.
In support of the UN Secretary General Global Education First Initiative, young leaders from around the world will convene in support of reaching the goal for all children, especially girls, in school and learning by 2015.
The UN in this regard will hold a series of event at its headquarters in New York.At the meeting, Sindh Minister for Women Development, Social Welfare and Special Education Rubina Saadat Qaimkhani, and Pakistan People’s Party MPA Sharmila Farooqi were also present.
It was shared that the state of girls’ education in Sindh did not present an encouraging picture. “Out of a total of 48,668 public schools only 25 percent are for girls, out of 4,800,802 enrolled students only 40 percent are girls and out of 152,319 teachers only 32 percent are women,” says the resolution.The news.
