King Edward Medical University medics to opt for varsity, health department

Lahore: Unrest gripped the senior doctors and staff of the King Edward Medical University on Friday, when the Punjab Health Department again sought from them their option whether they wanted to continue their services with the Punjab Health Department or they desired to be functionaries of the KEMU, one of the oldest and premier medical institutes of the country.

The Punjab Health Department issued these instructions in a letter addressed to the vice chancellor of the KEMU on Friday. The KEMU VC was directed to ensure the implementation on the letter the same day. The KEMU management later forwarded the instructions to the institute's all professors, doctors and demonstrators besides others to submit opinion in this regard.

Surprisingly, the KEMU management faced strong agitation especially from the professors and other senior doctors who termed it a conspiracy of some 'miscreants' who wanted to destroy the institute. They were of the view that this attempt was a part of a movement of some 'influential persons' who had 'dedicated' themselves against the wishes of the patients and wanted their monopoly.

They raised a question about the motives of issuing a letter at the time when the conspiracy against the setting up of new medical universities was at the peak and some are trying to get their hold on the health department.

According to a reliable source, astonishingly, almost all the staff of the KEMU including the professors, associate/assistant professors, doctors, demonstrators have opted to continue their services with the KEMU but with their reservations that the institute was being run without rules and regulations.

Seeking anonymity a senior doctor said that the influential people who wanted to destroy the KEMU, were hindering the approval of the rules and regulations of the university.

"These people have no services in any government medical institute and were running private hospitals besides holding key positions in a health organisation", he said adding that the same had also misguided the participants of the high powered meeting of the Chief Minister Punjab recently held on health issues and briefed the CM about so called health reforms programs.

He claimed that some of Punjab Health Department's senior officials were pressurising the staff to give their options against the KEMU. The staff was told that their future would be at stake in the university in the absence of service rules.

It is pertinent to mention here that almost a century's old King Edward Medical College was given status of university some two years ago.

Around 18 months ago, the same opinion had already been sought from the KEMU management and all the staff of the KEMU including the senior doctors submitted their wish to continue their services with the institute.

At present, strength of as many as one thousand staff was working in the KEMU as employees of the Punjab Health Department.

When contacted the spokesman of the KEMU, Dr Tabasum confirmed that most of the staff of the university had preferred the KEMU to Punjab Health Department.

To a query, she said that the syndicate meeting of the KEMU had given approval of service group of university, which could help streamlining the service structure of the staff. The Nation
