Punjab University teachers wants stern action against Jamiat
LAHORE: Punjab University (PU) teachers have demanded that Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif should take stern action against members of the Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT) for using weapons on campus and torturing students.
A statement issued by the PU administration on Wednesday stated that in a meeting chaired by Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran, the teachers expressed shock and anger against IJT activists for torturing students and guards a few days back.
The meeting discussed that the incidents of IJT’s violence had increased over the past few months and it was alarming for students, teachers and the administration. The participants of the meeting claimed that the IJT was helped by external elements in its activities. The meeting also passed a two-point resolution requesting the CM to help the university administration in curbing the illegal activities of the IJT.
Meeting: The CM was also urged to meet a delegation of senior PU teachers to discuss the issue. Some teachers said police help should be sought to enforce the writ of the administration. According to reports, some IJT activists attacked a function organised by the College of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences on Sunday and tortured students, teachers and guards, and fired shots in the air.
In another incident, IJT activists manhandled the guards of the English Language and Literature Department after the guards asked them not to place the IJT’s posters and banners on the department walls. They also roughed up the guards of the Institute of Business Administration, the Institute of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and forcibly pasted their posters on the walls of the university. The meeting mentioned that the IJT activists were mainly students expelled by the university.
