Punjab University Students block traffic after fellow's death

Lahore: A student of the Punjab University (PU) died on Tuesday evening when his motorbike collided with a stationary tractor-trolley in underpass at the New Campus due to poor visibility during loadshedding hours.

The victim, identified as Akif Javed, a BSc Engineering (Metallurgy and Material Sciences) student, was passing through the underpass near hostel No 14 on his motorbike when he rammed into a stationary tractor-trolley. As a result, he was injured. Rescue 1122 took him to the Jinnah Hospital where he died.

After this fatal incident, a large number of PU students gathered and staged a protest demonstration. They criticised the government and PU administration for prevailing loadshedding which caused death of their fellow. They also blocked the Canal Road for quite some time in late evening as protest.

A student, Rehan, said lights in the underpass had been out of order for the last many days while the PU administration failed to take any notice of it. He said it was also irresponsibility on part of university administration as to why a tractor-trolley was standing stationary in the underpass.
