University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences made major achievements in genetic

LAHORE:THE genomic research group of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) has made major achievements in genetic characterisation of livestock breeds.

Cases have already been filed for patents. According to a press release here on Wednesday, the head of the research group said that work on genetic characterisation and patent registration of Sahiwal, Red Sindhi and Cholistani cattle breeds was under way. Work on genes controlling multiple births in sheep and goats have been completed, he said. Similarly, the UVAS has started DNA fingerprinting of animals. Last year, a disputed bulls paternity case was successfully resolved using the DNA fingerprinting, he said. He added that work on cytogenetic screening of farm livestock species has been initiated for the documentation of standard nomenclature and hunting of chromosomal abnormalities in our farm livestock species.

More recently, the UVAS has developed links with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for joint research to introduce high throughput micro-array DNA technology in Pakistan. The research group has defined the phylogenomic enigma of ancient DNA dating back 29 million years. The research focuses to demonstrate that genomewide variation genotyping platform designed for one species can be used to genotype DNA from extinct species. Apart from Pakistan, the team belongs to 10 leading nations including USA, New Zealand, UK, France and Brazil.
