College of Medical Technology 2 students were suspended

Two male students of CMT at Pims were suspended
ISLAMABAD, Oct 27: Two male students of the College of Medical Technology (CMT) at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) were suspended on Wednesday for allegedly sexually harassing a junior male colleague.

Prof Mahmood Jamal, the executive director of Pims, told Dawn that “I have suspended the two accused students who were found involved in the alleged sexual harassment of their junior colleague.”

An official of Pims said on condition of anonymity that the action came after the students of the college came out protesting and refused to attend their classes unless the two seniors were investigated and punished.

“We will not attend classes until the two seniors, who have allegedly assaulted the junior student, are rusticated,” said one of the protesters.

The angry students chanted slogans against the college administration, specifically the warden of the hostel, for their alleged failure to punish the accused.Margalla police said it took the victim for a medical check up in Pims before registering his complaint. But at the check up he stated that the accused “attempted” to molest him.

Prof Jamal said a committee heard the students from both the sides after which the suspension orders were issued.

Also, the warden was immediately replaced because, according to the Pims chief, he had failed to maintain discipline in the hostel and take prompt action on the issue.

Prof Jamal said a larger disciplinary committee had been formed to probe into the matter thoroughly, adding there would be no leniency for the suspended students.

“The college is running its normal business and all the classes will be held in routine manner,” he assured. He, however, did not comment whether legal action would be initiated in the matter.

The police said registration of the case would depend on the medico legal report. “We will definitely register a case if he was subjected to molestation,” the police said, adding the complainant would have to prove even if the accused had made an attempt to sexually molest him.

During police investigation at CMT, it was revealed that the warden of the hostel had changed the room of the complainant, a first-year student, and accommodated him with the two second-year students. In practice, students of the same batch are given accommodation together.Dawn
