College lecturer shot at, injured
Karachi: A college lecturer was shot at and critically injured by unidentified outlaws. The incident took place in the lecturer's house, within the jurisdiction of the Al-Falah police station.
Munir Ahmed Arian was shot at by bandits at about 07:00 a.m. Friday. Initially the police were confused about whether it was an "inside job" or if some outsider had barged into the house and fired at the professor, while he was asleep in his room. Arain is a serving lecturer at the Jamia Millia College.
The neighbours heard gunshots from his house and knocked at the door but nobody answered. Subsequently, they climbed the wall and woke up the family. During the search, Arain was found lying in a pool of blood in his room. He had been shot once in the abdomen. He was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPGMC) in a critical condition where doctors operated upon him.
SHO Al-Falah, Azhar, claimed that a pistol was found under the bed of the injured lecturer. The weapon was confiscated. The police will check the fingerprints on it to determine whether it was used by an insider or by outsiders.
SHO Azhar said that the victim's wife refused to talk to the police. She said that they should speak to Arain himself when he regained consciousness. The professor awoke late Friday night, but even he refused to record his statement, even though the SHO maintained that his statement would help in the investigation.
PPI adds: Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) on Friday strongly condemned the attack on Assistant Professor of Jamia Millia Government Science College, Munir Arain, and said that there was law of jungle in Sindh.
The SPLA at a meeting presided over by its leader, Syed Riyaz Ahsan, said the culprits were moving freely in the city, leaving life and property of the citizens insecure while the rulers had adopted lull over the issue. It was also observed that the police had failed in overcoming the crimes in the city.
The meeting also expressed concern over insecurity in the colleges and the residences of the staff colonies and said that there were no proper security arrangements in the colleges and staff colonies. The News
