Corporal punishment is a crime: social activists
TIMERGARA: Social activists of Dir Lower on Thursday termed corporal punishment of school children as a crime. They also announced to run a two month campaign against the practice in schools. Speaking at a news conference at the Timergara Press Club after holding a seminar on corporal punishment, they said that research analysis had proved that children affected by violence in their childhood often showed signs of it as adults. They said corporal punishment had been banned by the government of Pakistan but it was still a common practice, especially in state run schools. They stated that the government of Pakistan had signed the international convention on child rights in 1989 and rectified it in 1990. According to the international law, corporal punishment of children should be widely condemned. \\\"It not only affects children bodily but also has drastic effects on their mind sets,\\\" Akbar Khan said, adding, \\\"Corporal punishment is a big hurdle in creating learning-friendly environments in schools.\\\"
