Research for Genetic Modification of  Dengue
Lahore :August 19: Government College University, Lahore, Zoology Department is researching into the genetic modification of Aedes aegypti mosquito to block the transmission of dengue vector to humans through her bite.
According to a press release issued Sunday, it was said by the university’s chief zoologist, Prof Dr Nusrat Jahan, while presenting a progress report to Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman about the research project being initiated in collaboration with Michigan State University, the US. Prof Nusrat Jahan said that Wolbachia, a genus of bacteria, would be used as a biological agent for the genetic modification of Aedes aegypti mosquito. She said that Wolbachia-based technology would make the mosquito incapable of carrying and transmitting dengue virus.
The vice-chancellor also discussed with the university’s zoologists the difficulties being faced by them in conducting the research and phases of genetic modification of the mosquito, saying that they would be provided with maximum support to conduct the research. He also advised the GCU Zoology Department chairperson to form different groups to speed up the pace of the project.
