University Students Federation's 'clash' with IJT averted at Punjab University

Lahore: The University Students Federation (USF), Punjab University, on Monday organised a procession to welcome PU law college student Asad Gujjar, who was shot at and injured at Hostel No. 16 in the Dec 3, 2008 firing incident.

The procession was organised by the law college students. USF president Atif Naeem Ranjha alleged that during the procession, some 50 IJT activists equipped with sticks and rods attacked students.

He alleged that they tried to disperse students by hurling life threats. The IJT men also tried to provoke them by chanting slogans. He claimed that all USF members remained calm and faced the situation with patience.

Punjab University IJT nazim Qaiser Sharif, however, claimed that no such incident took place on Monday.

He alleged the PU administration was trying to create rift among university students to fail government's attempt of restoring student unions in educational institutions. Earlier, speaking to the rally participants, the USF senior members discussed the prevailing environment in the university and criticised the role of Islami Jamiat Tulaba.

Speaking on the occasion, Asad Gujjar said he was not afraid of IJT, which tried to prevent him from pursuing the case. Asad said the USF would continue its struggle until the culprits were brought to book. After the procession ended peacefully, law college students strongly reacted against IJT's act of `aggression' and protested in front of the PU administration block. Dawn
