University of Karachi  Vice-Chancellor  urges proper proceduresfor appointing Cooperative Teachers

Karachi:University of Karachi (KU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Pirzada Qasim issued directions on Thursday to Deans and Chairpersons of the university to use the prescribed procedures for the appointment of Cooperative Teachers as many irregularities have come to his notice.

The notification from Prof. Qasim has been issued in reaction to the complaints that the university was hiring cooperative teachers, in spite of the current financial crunch to oblige various influential persons who were pressurising the VC and other high ups for the appointment, mainly dubious and sans merit. According to reliable sources a number of chairpersons have lodged their protest against the appointment of cooperative teachers without the recommendation from the department and availability of the vacant posts. The departments include Islamic Learning and Usul-ud-Deen from the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Department of Sindhi (Arts). The KU has prescribed the procedure for the appointment of these teachers that include: review of the application by three senior-most teachers of the department, forwarding the application by the Chairperson to the Dean and finally to the Registrar of the university. The posts of Full Time and Part Time Cooperative Teachers are to be approved by the KU Senate and finally by the KU Syndicate.

According to the sources at least two Chairpersons, Prof. Ghulam Mehdi of Islamic Learning and Dr Hussamuddin Mansoori of Usool-ud-Deen Departments, have protested vehemently against the appointments of Cooperative Teachers without their recommendation. Several such cases are in the offing and could be finalised without adopting the rules and regulations of the university.

The academics have welcomed the initiative from the VC but they are keeping their fingers crossed and consider this notification too late and less than the expectations of the fair-minded teachers.
