27 point buses for 28,000 students of Karachi University

KARACHI: Thousands of students of Karachi University (KU) face immense problems in reaching the campus due to acute shortage of university point buses. Presently, there are just 27 point buses to cater to the needs of some 28,000 students and teachers, and the university urgently requires at least 80 more buses to facilitate its students, faculty and non-teaching staff.

KU Transport Committee Incharge Zulqarnain Shadab said that presently there were just 34 point buses in the fleet of the varsity and out of them just 27 were in working order, adding that there was only one bus to serve more than 1,000 students.

He also said that the point buses presently plying on various routes were dangerously overcrowded, adding that in the past some students had died and got themselves injured after falling from the overcrowded buses.

He further said, “We have been taking Rs 3 per student for a long time, despite the increasing price-hike and rise in fuel prices,” adding that if funding of his department was not increased, they might think about increasing the fare. ppi
