Did JPMC nurse attempt suicide after sexual harassement?
Karachi:A third-year nursing student in the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) was found unconscious with a head injury near 96 Doctors’ Backyard Mess on Tuesday. There were unconfirmed reports that she had attempted suicide after allegedly being sexually harassed by a doctor.

Just a few steps away from the nursing student, Dr Jabbar, a Medico-Legal Officer, was also found with a fractured femur (hip bone). Both were taken to neurosurgery and orthopedic wards for examination.

It is being alleged that it is a clear case of sexual harassment. Head of the Emergency Department at the JPMC Dr Seemin Jamali said that it was a medico-legal case which involved a comprehensive medical examination of the injured.

“The patient is being examined by Dr Farida to know the cause of the injury. After the examination, it can be confirmed whether it was a sexual harassment case or not,” she said.

Dr Jamali added that an FIR had been lodged and the hospital will also conduct an internal inquiry into the matter.

She added that Dr Jabbar was an “irregular resident” at the 96 Doctors Backyard and had forcibly occupied the residency. “Even after being issued notices many a times, he would come back again.”

However, Dr Jamali did not confirm Dr Jabbar’s involvement in the case as the examination officer had not concluded anything about the girl’s condition till the filing of this report.

Meanwhile, Sindh Minister for Health Dr Sagheer Ahmed has ordered an inquiry into the matter and has asked the secretary health to report within three days about what had actually transpired. The news
