Sri Lanka Seeks KU help to Set up Modern Research facility
Karachi:July 12: The Sri Lankan Defence Ministry has requested the University of Karachi (KU) to help the ministry establish a multidisciplinary research facility, like the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, in the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), Sri Lanka.
This was stated by the Director, ICCBS, Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhry, while presiding over an official meeting held at the ICCBS on Thursday.He said that the KDU, which comes under the Defence Ministry, had decided to set up a world class research facility like the ICCBS in Sri Lanka at a cost of $10 million.
He maintained that the setup of the multidisciplinary research facility in the KDU under the guidance of Patron-in-Chief, ICCBS, Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman complied with international standard, and said that the ICCBS Administration would transfer technology and expertise between the two countries.
In this regard, the former Chairman, Higher Education Commission (HEC), and Patron-in-Chief of the ICCBS, Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, along with the Vice-Chancellor, University of Karachi, Prof Dr Muhammad Qaiser, and the Director, ICCBS, Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, recently paid a visit to Sir Lanka and visited the KDU, where they met with the higher officials of the Defence Ministry and the KDU.

 

The Vice-Chancellor, KDU, Major-General Milinda Peiris, welcomed the Pakistani scientists, and discussed the issues related to setting up of the world class research facility in Sri Lanka.It may be mentioned here that the KDU was established as the “General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy in 1981.
Subsequently, it was elevated to University status in 1988 by an act of parliament.The KDU is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (United Kingdom).Initially, the KDU was meant for military students but, now it has opened its doors to civilian students too.The news.
