Education Solution to Militancy and Poverty: Shahbaz
Lahore :18 August : Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif has said that illiteracy, poverty and extremism could be eradicated with the help of education.
A culture of research and development, intelligence and honesty could enable us to face all challenges”, he said while addressing a prize distribution ceremony to honour position holders of this years’ matriculation examination at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Saturday.
About 123 position holders from nine education boards of Punjab and 14 overall position holders from other provinces were awarded merit certificates and cash prizes.
Cash prizes of Rs 400,000, Rs 300,000 and Rs 200,000 were awarded to students who secured first, second and third positions respectively. The head of the institutions were also rewarded with Rs 200,000, Rs 150,000, and Rs 100,000 each for first, second and third positions respectively. Lauding the position holders on their commendable feat, the CM said that the dream of making Pakistan a developed country could be materialised with achievements in the field of education.
He said that students should be equipped with modern education to put the country on the path to progress. Referring to the detractors of Daanish schools, he said the schools, built for orphans, were criticised by a certain school of thought.
The CM said, “Danish schools were set up to empower the less privileged and bring them on a par with the pass-outs of elite grammar schools of the country.” He said some sceptics doubt the success of the Daanish schools on financial grounds. He further said that they should not worry, as these schools would generate their own funds like Aitchison College or other private grammar schools.
Shahbaz Sharif said he would establish a system based on justice and equality with equal opportunities for the deprived segments of society.
He said that the Punjab government had founded the Punjab Education Endowment Fund and about 50,000 need-based scholarships were being granted to students. He said that position holders were provided an opportunity to study in great educational institutions of the world and meet great academics, including Nobel laureates, so that they could be inspired to achieve greatness for the country. He urged the students to earn a name for their country, which had been facing many challenges and had lost its sense of glory. He went on to say that electricity and gas worth billions of rupees had been pilfered by some industries, which had promoted unfairness in the country. He expressed the resolve to stamp out all illegal activities.
The CM regretted the fact that the rulers had emptied the national coffer and the nation had been handed a begging bowl in the form of foreign debts.
He said that the nation would have to emulate countries like Germany and Japan, which rose from the ashes and turned defeat into victory. He congratulated the position holders on their glorious achievements and urged them to make the country proud by their services. The CM also invited parliamentarians and journalists to award certificates to position holders. Provincial ministers, including Education Minister Rana Mashood Ahmed, parliamentarians, vice chancellors of public sector universities, eminent journalists, intellectuals, educationists, teachers and a large number of students and their parents were also present on the occasion. app.
