Presentation on Chevening ScholarShips
Lahore :September 18: British High Commission (BHC) Islamabad, partnering with the Lahore Press Club (LPC), hosted a presentation on the British government’s Chevening Scholarship Programme 2014/15 on Tuesday.
The event attracted a large number of journalists from print and electronic media.
A team from the British High Commission, including Jonathan Williams, BHC Press Attaché and Head of Chevening Programme in Pakistan and Shahla Qayyum, Deputy Head of Chevening Pakistan, highlighted history, objectives and benefits of the programme and encouraged prospective applicants, especially journalists, to apply.
The 2014/15 academic year opened on September 1 while the closing date is November 15, 2013. According to Jonathan Williams, the Chevening scholarships offer the potential future leaders of Pakistan the opportunity to study for a postgraduate qualification in the United Kingdom. “Students in the UK benefit not only from our world class universities but also from our dynamic, vibrant and multicultural society,” he said, adding that, “Our universities benefit from having top professionals study with them.”

The BHC press attaché, Jonathan Williams, dispelled the impression that the programme was a brain-drain and termed it “brain-gain”, saying the scholarship programme was aimed at identifying future leaders in Pakistan. To a question about Chevening South Asia Journalism Programme, Jonathan said funding for the said programme was not confirmed yet. Shahla Qayyum said there were over 42,000 Chevening alumni around the world, adding that over 1,200 Pakistani nationals had been awarded the scholarship so far. As per the eligibility criteria for Pakistanis, the applicants for 2014/15 Chevening Scholarships must be a Pakistani citizen and intend to return at the end of the period of study, hold a Masters degree or 4-year bachelors degree, overall band score of at least 6.5 in IETLS with at least two years’ work or equivalent experience and be able to obtain the correct visa, and receive an unconditional offer from a UK university.
