PUNJAB Universitys History department Moot on cities in Muslim world

LAHORE:PUNJAB Universitys History department in collaboration with Pakistan Study Centre organized a seminar on Do Cities Have Value? Dubai, Islamabad and the Struggle for Muslim Modernity. Dr Chad Haines from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA was the keynote speaker. He emphasised that Dubai and Islamabad were two important cities of the Muslim world, which were developed in modern times after careful planning. He pointed out that Islamabad was developed during the military regime of General Ayub Khan and it manifested the nature of state in its architecture and urban planning. According to him, the Greek architect who did the town planning for Islamabad had been influenced by western ideas of modernity. It was scientifically planned in the modern ideal of market at the centre of the housing colonies.
