UAF to set up satellite ground station for crops’
Faisal abad : October 05 :  The University of Agriculture Faisalabad will set up a satellite ground station to analyse situation of crops keeping climate impact, drought and flood in view, said UAF Vice-Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan.
Addressing the inaugural session of space week organised by the UAF in collaboration with the Suparco here on Friday, he said that the satellite ground station would help increase the agricultural productivity. He said that the satellite station would get data of fields to ensure precision agriculture (PA) and geographic information system (GIS) for ensuring food security in the country. He said that PA was based on satellite and remote sensing that help the farming community to forecast weather impact and other information regarding their fields so that they could cultivate their crops accordingly. He said that Pakistan needed to prepare skilled manpower in the space science. The world had become the global village because of technological advancements. He said that Pakistan was blessed with talented people and it was need of the hour to polish their skills to prove their mettle in science and technology.

 

Suparco General Manager Iftikhar Bhatti said that the Suparco had launched a telecommunication satellite to get the information about the space and ensure internet facilities in 2011. Water Management Research Centre Director Dr Allah Bakhsh said that the university in collaboration with the USAID was mulling to establish the remote sensing centre.

 

ORIC Director Dr Asif Ali, Community College Principal Dr Khalilur Rehman, Laboratory High School for Boys Headmaster Saleem Mohsin and Laboratory Girls High School Headmistress Tasneem Zubair were also present on the occasion. Later, the UAF vice-chancellor visited stalls set up in connection with the space week.
