International Day of Peace Celebrated at SLS
Rawalpindi : September 22 : While there are many important UN days celebrated all year around, the International Day of Peace observed every year on September 21 all over the world hits close to home. In the midst of the daily losses and heartbreak that Pakistani people have been living with, the message of hope is what resounded on the International Day of Peace celebrated by the students of Sadeeqa’s Learning System (SLS) Montessori & High School, Tufail Road branch here on Friday.
Parents walked into a canopy of peace-dove origamis billowing in the breeze straight into an interactive peace festival. Students from grade 2 to 10 had artwork, dances, songs and various presentations on what peace meant and how we all could work towards it. A troupe of peace messengers walked up to parents after every little while with new handmade gifts each time - badges, little hand banners and book marks with messages of peace.
Amidst the fun and games, a problem solving wheel gave grownups ideas on better ways to deal with a less than ideal situation. A special Peace in the Ocean presentation talked about how humans are disrupting the peace of water animals. High school students talked about racial discrimination, ethnic violence and made a special dedication to their Aao Dosti Karein project in which they had made pen pals with students of City Montessori School, Lucknow in India under the umbrella of ‘Aman Ki Asha’.
A stall selling handmade items out of recyclables was raising funds for Bostaan’ilm, a non-profit afternoon school that uses SLS’s building free of rent and utilities. Branch Head Samina Zeeshan was proudly telling parents that all the art work and presentations that they were seeing were 100% her students’ handiwork and initiative.
The essence of this day, put into words by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, is ‘let us pledge to teach our children the value of tolerance and mutual respect. Let us invest in the schools and teachers that will build a fair and inclusive world that embraces diver-
