British Council to Adopt 72 public Schools in Punjab
Lahore:September 16: THE British Council will adopt 72 public schools in 12 different districts of Punjab namely Khushab, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Okara, Sahiwal, Vehari, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh and DG Khan, from the next year.
Under the project, 72 public schools would be granted the status of “British Council Schools.” The British Council will adopt six schools each in selected districts. British Council Punjab Director Richard Wayers stated this during a meeting with Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashhood at his office on Sunday, a handout said. Giving the details of the programme, Wayers said teachers training workshops had already begun while 26 teachers from Bahawalpur, 17 from Multan, 12 from Faisalabad, 20 from Sialkot, 26 from Jhelum and 24 from schools of Chakwal, besides 250 teachers of 125 public sector schools, had been developed as master trainers through various online courses, adding that 500 other teachers would be given training in professional development and global citizenship, etc. He said the teachers would also be imparted English language and computer skills’ training.
The meeting decided to enroll 2,500 students in various government schools during the next three months under a pilot project to be jointly launched by the Punjab Education Department in collaboration with the British Council Punjab. Social workers from five NGOs, attached with the British Council, would remain in constant contact with the school administration and the students’ parents so that the students might not drop out. The meeting was told that the social workers belonging to Awaz Foundation (Muzaffargarh), Women Rights Association (Multan), Participatory Welfare Services (Layyah), Sudhar Society (Sialkot and Narowal) and Anwar Jannat Memorial Foundation (Jhang) shall voluntarily contribute in this project. Director Youth and Society Project British Council Punjab Saadia Rehman, English language consultant Daniel Sooper Bhatt and Project Director Saad Bajwa were also present.The news.
