Lahore :October 07: PUNJAB Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmad has announced upgrading all assistant librarians working in Grade-16 to librarians in Grade-17.
Presiding over a consultative session with the office-bearers of Punjab College Libraries Association on Sunday, he said Punjab government has decided to convert 186 college libraries of the province into “Information Resource Centres” by introducing massive open line courses after digitalisation of all these libraries besides provision of a new service structure to the librarians for the first time in the history of the province.
Rana Mashhood said all the posts of assistant librarians would stand abolished adding it has been decided that initial recruitment and selection of librarians would be made through Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) in Grade-17 in future and the total strength of librarians in different grades has been enhanced from 332 to 415 through creation of new posts. The notification in this regard has been issued by the Punjab Higher Education Department (HED), he added. Elaborating the 4-tier service structure for librarians, Rana Mashhood said that these librarians would get promotion on their turn to senior librarians (Grade-18), Deputy Chief Librarians (Grade-19) and Chief Librarian (Grade-20) according to the revised criteria to be evolved in service rules which would be finalised by the Punjab Education Advisory Board within next three months. He declared this new service structure as a historic landmark in the history of the province. He hoped that a joint working group of Punjab College Libraries Association and Higher Education Department would formulate a code of conduct for librarians, which would be implemented in letter and spirit. According to the notification, 173 posts of male and female librarians of Grade-17 have been increased to a number of 208 posts while 16 posts of senior librarians of Grade-18 have been increased to 144 and six posts of deputy chief librarians of Grade-19 have been enhanced to 62 posts. Four new posts of chief librarian of Grade-20 have also been created, the minister informed.
