In Lahore 95 lecturers reinstated on Supreme Court order

LAHORE:THE Punjab Higher Education Department secretary on Saturday issued order/notification regarding reinstatement of 95 ad hoc lecturers following orders of Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry heading a three-member bench, including Justice Mian Shakirulllah Jan and Justice Nasirul Mulk, had issued the direction on March 25.

The apex court had also directed the Punjab government to clear the arrears of the lecturers.

Reportedly the Punjab government had sacked the lecturers, who had been serving for almost 14 years, from service in 2001 instead of regularising them. In 2002, the Supreme Court had directed the Punjab government to regularise all of the sacked lecturers, but the government did not follow the court order. The Lahore High Court later directed the government to implement the court order but the provincial administration challenged the order of the LHC in the Supreme Court.

Punjab Higher Education Department Secretary Azhar Hussain Shahmim told The News the lecturers had been asked to report to the department within 30 days. He said posting orders would be issued as soon as the lecturers would report.

To a question, he said the lecturers had been asked to bring their termination letters from principals of their respective colleges to determine the arrears.
