650 ad-hoc Sindh lecturers not paid since June

Karachi: The Sindh Professors' and Lecturers' Association (SPLA) on Thursday criticised the provincial education department for not honouring its commitment of disbursing salaries to 650 ad-hoc lecturers before Eidul Fitr.

SPLA President Prof Ather Hussain Mirza said that the payment of salaries to about 650 ad-hoc lecturers was stopped in June. He said the provincial education department despite its repeated assurances given to the SPLA had neither disbursed their salaries for the last three months nor taken up the issue of regularisation seriously.

He said that the education department by not disbursing salaries to the ad-hoc lecturers deprived them and their families of festivities on Eid.

It was ironical that at a time when there was a shortage of around 3,000 teachers in colleges across Sindh, the government was reluctant to regularise the services of ad-hoc lecturers, Prof Mirza said.

As against the sanctioned strength of 8,500 college teachers, only 5,500 teachers are working at government colleges in the province, according to SPLA.

The association's president said that there was a dearth of teachers of English, physics, mathematics and commerce in colleges and requested the education minister to get the salary and regularisation issues of ad-hoc lecturers resolved at the earliest. He also demanded that arrangements be made to appoint teachers on a priority basis to overcome teachers' shortage in government colleges. Dawn
