LAHORE : ( Wednesday, July 15, 2009 ): Punjab Chief Minister Mian Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif has urged the distinguished female graduates that after getting education they must play their role in the development of the country. He said in this way they can payback the money which the nation spent on their education. The chief minister was addressing the prize distribution ceremony of PU BA/BSc Annual Examination 2009 at the Faisal Auditorium, New Campus on Wednesday. Provincial Education Minister Mujtab Shuja-ur-Rehman, PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran, Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan, Controller Examinations Prof Zahid Karim Khan, position holder students, their parents and teachers were present on the occasion.



The chief minister said the Punjab government was fully committed to the development of education in the country and therefore the government had established Endowment Fund for the talented and needy students so that all the hurdles in their way could be removed. Over a demand of PU Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran regarding provision of matching grant from the Punjab government for faculty development programme, the Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif said if the PU succeeds in getting PhD faculty members ratio from 35 to 100 percent in coming five-years, the government would provide Rs 100 millions annually to the varsity.

Congratulating the position holders, their parents and teachers, Shahbaz Sharif said this achievement was a pride for them. He said after the declaration of all examinations' results in Punjab province, he would invite all the position holders, their parents and teachers at a special ceremony. The chief minister announced Rs 200,000 prize each for first position holders, Rs 150,000 for second position and Rs 100,000 for third position holders of BA and BSc exams separately. Moreover, he also announced that Punjab government would bear all the educational expenses of position holders if they got admissions in MA/MSc in Harvard, Cambridge and any other varsity of such repute. He appreciated the contributions of VC Dr Mujahid Kamran and Controller Examinations Prof Zahid Karim Khan for early declaration of BA/BSc result and announced one-month salary bonus for the staff of Examinations Department.

In his address, Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran said only those nations were developed and dominant that were focusing on education. He said progress was not possible in any field of life without education. He said today the Muslim countries were lacking behind because of the lack of education whereas the western countries recognizing the importance of education concentrated on education and resultantly they were developed countries in the world. He said the real work of universities was the research and the teacher had very crucial role in it. He said at present the PhD faculty ratio in PU was 35% while the present administration was fully focusing on this issue. He said PU had set Rs 6.5 crore this year as compared to Rs 4 crore of last year's budgets for the Faculty Development Programme. He said it was necessary that universities should be financially impendent to meet the target of world ranking. He requested for the provision of grant in this regard.



Earlier, Controller Examinations Prof Zahid Karim Khan said the policies and steps of the chief minister had proved that he was very much concerned to promote education in the country. He said the sapling of Endowment Fund which was planted by the chief minister one-year ago had now grown to a strong tree and many students were getting benefits from the programme. He said PU Examination Department had been conducting 292 various exams. He said that this year 1,83,350 candidates appeared in 530 centres across the Punjab province in BA/BSc exam and 50849 were declared successful giving a pass percentage of 27.73. As many as 11 monitoring teams were constituted to make the exam process transparent and fool-proof and only 723 UMC cases were registered and most of them have been resolved. He said due to better performance of Exam Department, the result was declared 4-weeks earlier than last year. He announced Rs 100,000 each for first position holders, Rs 75,000 each for second position holders and Rs 65,000 each for third position holders.



It is noteworthy that girls completely outshined boys in the exam and bagged all the top three positions of BA exam as well as top three positions of BSc exam. In BSc examination, Amna Riaz of Punjab College for Civil Lines Gujranwala secured 696 marks and clinched first position, Daniah Tahir of Federal Government College for Women Islamabad bagged second position by securing 663 marks while Musavarah Sarwar stood third securing 656 marks. In BA examination, Umme Habiba, a private candidate from Lahore district secured 673 marks and clinched first place, Asia Ashraf, also a private candidate from Sheikhupura district bagged second position by securing 650 marks while Saira Laique, also private candidate stood third with 646 marks. As many as 119538 female students appeared in BA/BSc exam and 38714 were declared successful. The girls' pass percentage remained 32.38. And 63812 male students appeared in the examination and 12135 were declared successful and their pass percentage remained 19.01.
