Seraiki Dept sought at Gomal University
DERA ISMAIL KHAN:February 15: The participants of a literary and cultural conference here on Sunday asked the government to remove all impediments to the establishment of a Seraiki Department at the Gomal University in Dera Ismail Khan.

They were speaking at the Second Seraiki Conference arranged here by a Peshawar-based a literary, cultural and social welfare organization, Gandhara Hindko Board.

A number of writers, poets, academicians, notables and public representatives attended the conference. Dera Ismail Khan District Nazim Nawabzada Azizullah Khan Alizai was the chief guest on the occasion. Member of National Assembly Jamshed Ahmad Dasti also attended the moot.

In his address, Jamshed Ahmad Dasti said the promotion of regional languages and cultures led to a healthy and tolerant society. He said Seraiki was an important language, which had a distinction of being spoken in all the provinces of the country.

Nawabzada Azizullah Khan Alizai said Seraiki was a sweet language and the poets of this language attracted attention when they composed and recited verses in this language. He said all the languages and cultures must be provided opportunities to develop.

The nazim said there was a time when the literary and cultural activities were very frequent in Dera Ismail Khan. “But later the environment was disturbed. The writers, poets and artistes aspired for the return of good old days.  Now with the blessings of Allah, Dera Ismail Khan is again seeing the revival of that favourable environment,” said the nazim.

Nawabzada Azizullah Khan Alizai said peace had been restored to Dera Ismail Khan due to the efforts and sacrifices of law-enforcers. He assured that the district government would play a role in promoting the literary and cultural pursuits in Dera Ismail Khan.

Gandhara Hindko Board Chairman Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi, Vice-Chairman Dr Salahuddin and General Secretary Ziauddin spoke on the occasion. They said launched in 1993 primarily for the promotion of the Hindko language and culture, the board work had now expanded to other languages spoken in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The board representatives said they would arrange similar conferences at Swat and Chitral for the promotion of the languages spoken in those districts. A literatus and the Seraiki language activist, Dr Shahid Masood Khan, shed light on the importance of the Seraiki language. He was all-praise for the Gandhara Hindko Board for arranging the Second Seraiki language Conference in Dera Ismail Khan and providing a platform to the Seraiki literati. The news.
