Karachi Colleges admission process under CAP begins
Karachi, Aug 05, 2008: The process of admissions to first year classes under the Centralised Admission Policy-2008 (CAP) will begin on Tuesday with the sale of brochures/placement forms at 42 designated branches of the Habib Bank Limited in all the 18 towns of the city.
Placement forms will be available for sale, each costing Rs100, at the banks tentatively till August 20. However, the date for the issuance of these forms can be extended if the candidates seeking admission are not provided with marks sheets of their matriculation examinations in the due course of time.
This was announced by the Sindh director-general of colleges, Prof Dr Rafique Ahmed Siddiqui, who is also the chairman of the CAP committee, at a press conference held at the PECHS Girls College on Monday. Director (Inspection), DG Office, Prof Arshad Jamal and other members of the CAP committee were also present.
The number of seats allocated for the academic year 2008-09 has been curtailed by 3,370 despite the fact that the number of government colleges in the city has been increased from 118 to 123 with the setting up of five new colleges (four for girls and one for boys) which will start functioning from the ensuing academic year.
There are now 123 government colleges in the city and the number of seats allocated this year in all the six faculties –Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical, Computer Science, Commerce, Humanities and Home Economics – stand at 80,250 (38,690 for boys and 41,535 for girls) whereas a total of 83,620 seats were allocated last year in 118 colleges.
Unveiling the salient features of the policy, Prof Siddiqui said that of the total 80,250 seats allocated in the city's 123 colleges for the 2008-09 session, 21,720 students (14,370 male and 7,350 female) would be accommodated in the Pre-Engineering group; 15,180 students (4,820 male and 10,360 female) would be granted admissions to the Pre-Medical group; 1,255 students (690 male and 565 female) in Computer Science group; 22,640 students (14,540 male and 8,100 female) in Commerce group; 18,830 students (4,270 male and 14,560 female) in Humanities group, while 600 girls would be accommodated in the Raa'na Liaquat Ali Khan College of Home Economics.
Special quota
Dr Siddiqui said that a two per cent quota other than merit had been reserved for girl students aspiring to study at three co-education colleges of the city, while another two per cent quota other than merit had been allocated for physically challenged students.
He said that all those applying against the disables students' quota would be required to produce a disability certificate from the health department.
He said that all the 33 higher secondary schools of the city in which admissions were given under the CAP, last year, had now been excluded from the purview of the CAP and as such provision of admissions to these institutions would be at the discretion of the relevant schools' administrations.
Choice of colleges
He said that candidates seeking admissions to first year classes would be required to submit their placement forms at the bank branches along with marks sheets of matriculation examination after mentioning the faculty and eight colleges of their choice, keeping in view the cut off marks at which admissions were closed in those colleges last year.
In this regard, he clarified that though the candidates who had passed their matriculation examination from the Board of Secondary Education, Karachi, could submit their placement forms at any of the 40 designated branches of the HBL, all those candidates of General Science Group (Computer), Home Economics, O' Level, Technical Board and other than Karachi board, including foreign students, who might obtain the placement forms from any branch of the bank, would be required to submit their placement forms at only two branches of the bank which are located at Karimabad and Mansfield Street, Saddar.
Eligibility
Students who have got through their Secondary School Certificate/Technical Board Examination/ G.C.E (O' Level) or its equivalent annual examination 2008 will be eligible for admissions. While, those students who have passed their matriculation or equivalent examinations in the year 2007 (annual/supplementary) or in any year up to five years before 2008 are also eligible for admission with the condition that five marks for every year of gap will be deducted from their total marks to determine their merit.
Claim Centres
He said that the committee had also set up 12 centers (seven for girls and five for boys) at different colleges where admission-related issues would be resolved the same day it received the claim forms from the aggrieved candidates.
At the outset, Prof Siddiqui said that it was on the instructions of Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq that the directorate-general of colleges had not increased any charges for the CAP's admission brochures/placement forms, colleges' tuition fee and claim forms although tuition fee of colleges was last raised in 1999.
