Islami Jamiat Talaba Peshawar University Demands action against SHO

Peshawar: Expressing serious concern over the alleged torture of a student by university campus police, Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) Wednesday demanded stern action against the station house officer and provost of the University of Peshawar (UoP).

Addressing a news conference here, campus president of IJT Shad Mohammad Shaheen said that the SHO Waqar on the directives of Provost UoP Dr Bashir arrested a student of the university Shah Zaman and severely tortured him.

The IJT office-bearer said that the police dragged him from his beard and struck his head against the wall. Owing to the severe torture in the police station on the night of April 16, 2010, Shah Zaman fell unconscious.

Fearing his death in the police station, he alleged the police rushed him to the nearby Khyber Teaching Hospital, where after necessary treatment, he was thrown out on a road in the university.

The IJT leader claimed that in order to conceal the incident, the police rearrested him and registered a fake case against him on the basis of which he was sent to jail for three days. The police also took away with them the record of this medical treatment from the hospital, he alleged.

Shad Mohammad said that due to the police excesses, the university campus had virtually been converted into a police state. He appealed to the chief justice Peshawar High Court, the governor and police high-ups to look into the matter and take stern action against the police officials involved in the torture of the student.
