NWFP 50% literacy to be achieved by 2015Minister for Elementary and Secondary Education

PESHAWAR (APP): The NWFP Minister for Elementary and Secondary Education Sardar Hussain Babak has said that the present government was taking keen interest in the provision of basic education facilities to eliminate the menace of illiteracy and to fulfill the commitment of government made at various forums. He further said that a number of initiatives have been taken in this regard including "Literacy for all" project in the province. He was addressing a briefing regarding promotion of basic education organized for parliamentarians in Islamabad the other day. The briefing was arranged by Executive Director Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency. The Minister said that Elementary Education Foundation (EEF) was also working for strengthening elementary education in private sector in line with the policy of the government. "For strengthening basic education in the private sector, EEF was also financing private educational institutions, he added. The Minister further said that Literacy for All project had been designed to achieve 50% adult literacy by the year 2015 and so far 48000 Literacy Centers have been established and 883166 illiterates were made literate across the province. "Provision of free textbooks to all the students up to intermediate level, stipends to all the girls students from class 6 to 10, edible oil to girls students at primary level and establishment of 100000 literacy centers are the goals of present provincial government to achieve, he maintained.
