From 3 to 33, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) grows over 4 yrs

Karachi: Before 2003, the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) consisted of only three institutes - Dow Medial College (DMC), Sindh Medical College (SMC) and the Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases. During the next four years, however, 30 new institutes were to be added to it. Twenty-two of them have already been completed and started functioning.

This was stated by DUHS VC Professor Masood Hameed Khan Tuesday during a briefing about their progress. Dr Masood said that 466 people have been given artificial legs and hands at a cost of more than Rs 160,000 at the Dow University Artificial Limb Center (DUAL). In case a patient was unable to afford this treatment, he wasn't charged.

The Dow Diagnostic Reference and Research Laboratory (DDRRL) conducts more than 193 types of medicinal tests at very nominal rates. "In our country there is an acute shortage of trained manpower and despite the fact that institutions and departments are set up and the latest equipment is provided, a shortage of trained personnel hampers their productivity," said Masood. In view of the dearth of trained dental surgeons, nurses, technical staff and health management professionals, institutes of nursing, medical technology, dental college and health management have been established.

Institutes that have been completed include the Dow International Medical College (DIMC), Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Institute of Oral Health Sciences (DIIKIOHS), School of Dental Care Professionals, Institute of Nursing (ION), Institute of Medical Technology (IMT), Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), Artificial Limb Center, Dow College of Pharmacy (DCOP), Institute of Health Management (IHM), Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IBMS), Dow Diagnostic Research and Reference Lab (DDRRL), CT Scan and MRI Center, Sarwar Zuberi Liver Center (SZLC), National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (NIDE), National Institute of Liver and GI Diseases (NILGID) and a Quality Enhancement Cell(QEC). In addition to these, a digital library, a computerized campus management center, a top-notch examination department, department of medical education and research, separate departments for MPhil and PhD students and a computer-learning center have also been completed.

Institutions nearing completion include the Jinnah Genome Center, Infectious Diseases Department, a 500-bed general hospital, gymnasium and sports complex, public library, vocational training center, theatre complex and a 200-bed TB hospital.

The VC also said that employees of DUHS have been given medical cover and all employees will be provided insurance polices. DUHS employees and students are also likely to get university-sponsored laptops.

He said that the provincial government has allocated Rs 408.054 million for DUHS while the remaining university-related expenditure will be borne by DUHS from its own resources.

PPI adds: DUHS VC Dr Masood said that continuous medical education and faculty development is the need of the hour and it is imperative that doctors, postgraduates and undergraduates should be well trained and knowledgeable about the latest developments in medical sciences. For this purpose, a Professional Development Center (PDC) with latest equipment and manikins was established where more than 300 workshops and seminars have already been conducted. Hundreds of medical students and doctors from all over the country have benefited from these workshops. Daily Times
