Schools to open from Aug 1

Karachi, July 30, 2008: The Sindh Education and Literacy Department has announced that all government and private educational institutions throughout Sindh will re-open from August 1, 2008 after the end of summer vacations.

Provincial Minister for Education and Literacy Pir Mazharul Haq had, earlier, on July 26, 2008, said that there should be no confusion over the date. He, however, added that he would call a meeting with officials to decide whether the schools should open from the 1st or the 8th.

On Tuesday, the education department announced August 1 as the opening date for schools throughout the province. Private school management, however, agreeing to follow the government's guidelines, said that they will open their schools form August 4, 2008.

The Private Schools Management Association Chairman Khalid Shah said on Tuesday, "August 1 is a Friday, and hardly any student will attend school that day. Saturday and Sunday are the weekend and private schools will most probably open from Monday, August 4."

He noted that the current academic year, only eight months long, will also be shorter than the previous years as the federal government has announced that the academic year will begin from April starting 2009. Daily Times
