UVAS to set up Biogas Resource Centre
Lahore:July 12: UNIVERSITY of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore has decided to establish a Biogas Resource Centre on its Ravi Campus Pattoki to facilitate and train professionals needed in the field of renewable energy sources.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, the decision was made at a meeting at UVAS co-chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha and Special Assistant to Chief Minister Punjab Ch Muhammad Arshad Jatt and attended by representatives of the Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab, Punjab Rural Support Programme and Community Development Programme Gujranwala. The Vice-Chancellor told the meeting that UVAS was also constructing a 25-cubic meter biogas digester on Ravi Campus as part of measures to use renewable energy sources. The demonstration of running a turbine by using biogas from the digester will be held after the complete installation of this digester. The meeting also discussed other issues relating to biogas applicability in remote areas to address the energy crisis.
Speaking on the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor said that Pakistan had 57m large animals (cows and buffalos) and their dung could be used for producing energy at community level and even on a larger scale. He said that energy crisis could be reduced to a great extent if alternative energy sources were used properly and effectively. Arshad Jatt lauded the leading role of UVAS in supporting government initiatives, especially its collaboration with the Punjab government, in initiating the biogas project for tackling the energy crisis. He said the govt was committed to ending energy crisis and mitigating people’s problems caused by loadshedding. The news.
