Asad Muhammad writer recently bestowed with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in recognition of his Urdu literature.

Karachi:Asad Muhammad Khan, an accomplished writer and poet, was recently bestowed with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in recognition of his contribution to Urdu literature. His beautifully weaved short stores have enriched Urdu fiction, and he is amongst the very few writers whose short stories have all appeared in the form of a major collection titled Jo Kahanian Likheen.

According to contemporary writers and critics, he is not an ordinary writer, but enjoys a special status in the writers community as they contend that he has a different taste in story writing. Moreover, critics have hailed his ability to uniquely depict the life and the characters of this society.

The writers who addressed the book launch ceremony of Asad Muhammad Khans major collection of short stories unequivocally stated that he was more creative and innovative in his writings, and that is why he is regarded as the true representative of fiction writers of contemporary literature. The writers, including Sehar Ansari, Prof. Ali Haider Malick, Saba Ekram, Syed Mazhar Jameel, A Khayyam, Ahmed Zainuddin, Shamim Manzar, Asif Maalick and Mubeen Mirza, noted in their speeches that Khan is not a writer who provides a strange element in his works but shares experiences of life.

The speakers noted that the stories exposed the actual social and political history of the sub-continent by portraying the true customs, traditions and living styles of the people. They further said that he has brought amazing experiences to life in terms of description and language of characters, as well as depicting ordinary people.

According to Ali Haider Malick, by giving perfect short stories, Khan has not only enriched Urdu literature, but provided us with lively characters through his works. Saba Ekram observed that Khan has succeeded in capturing the actual social fabric, which also demonstrates his maturity in Urdu fiction. Shamim Manzar and Asif Maalick pointed out that Khan presented true social history in his fiction. Syed Mazhar Jameel highlighted that Khan not only accepted tough challenges but proved his skills in deftly painting varying situations and difficult characters. In order to depict social truths, Khan made lingual experiences on the one hand, and took benefit of creative illusion on the other, Jameel concluded.

Sehar Ansar held that courage of expression could be witnessed in the fictional work of Khan. Mubeen Mirza who is the publisher of his Khans fifth collection of short stories titled Teesray Pehar Ki Kahanian said in his note that from his first collection Khirkhki Bhar Aasman to his fifth collection, Khan has covered the length and breadth of the unique forms and styles of short stories. Mirza, while referring to his pieces such as Maidada, Basooday Ki Maryum Ik Tukrra Dhoop Kaa and Shehre Murdagan- Aik Composition, said that Khans art was at its peak as he had employed his skills to such an extent that he deserved to be glorified, recognised and appreciated.

The first story of his fifth collection titled Darya Ab Maira Huwa, which has been termed as Nazm by the author is extremely interesting, and slightly autobiographical, along with depicting an amalgamation of local people and mores. The fictional poem is very beautiful and unique in the sense that it first paints an idea of nostalgia, then rejects it, and then creates and comprehends another nostalgia by loving local inhabitants and their culture, their rivers, and their wisdom.

His other stories such as Darul Khilafay Aur Log, Tasveer Say Nikla Aadmi, Sufaid Gayun Ka Massacre and Khanoon also portray different societies, different characters with different languages but one thing which remains constant is that the writer is keen to bring to light actual psyche and problems of people in terms of their lifestyle, whether they are feudal lords, industrialists, tribal chiefs, state actors or non-state actors or just common folks, which is yet another rejoinder of his love of humanity and humanism.
