Girls, boys share top positions in Peshawar Board results
PESHAWAR:31 July: The Peshawar Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (PBISE) on Monday announced results for intermediate examinations for 2019 with both girls and boys sharing top positions.
The overall top position was bagged by Tazmeen Malik of the Jinnah College by securing 1,003 marks in the pre-medical group. The second position was secured by Peshawar ICMS College System’s Sajjad Ali Khan with 1,001 marks in the pre-medical group while Jinnah College’s Maimoona Khan took the third spot with 1,000 marks in the same group.
At a prize distribution ceremony at the hall of PBISE in Peshawar on Monday, officials disclosed that some 55,747 students had appeared for the board exams. Of these, 43,954 students were declared as passed with a pass percentage of 78.85 per cent.
Adviser to the Chief Minister on Education Ziaullah Bangash, who was the chief guest, handed out certificates and prizes among position-holders.
In his address, Bangash said that soon, the public will see the efforts of the incumbent government in the field of education.
He added that they were working on equipping the board with modern technology.
In the pre-engineering group, Jinnah College’s Aleena Dawood secured the first position with 990 marks. Laiba Baig was second with 989 marks and Islamia College’s Aizaz Ahmed was third with 978 marks.
In computer science, PEF’s Sadia Yaqoob was first with 925 marks. She was followed by New Fazaia Degree College’s Muhammad Shaheer Qureshi in second with 920 marks. The third position was secured by Jinnah College’s Nabiha Wasim with 905 marks.
Seminary students can excel too
Shah Khelullah, a student of Jamia Usmania who had topped the Theology Group examinations of the Peshawar Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (PBISE), said that those studying in religious seminaries are not inferior to students of conventional education systems.
He added for the past two consecutive years, seminary students have been obtaining positions in the board exams. Curiously, while the PBISE mentioned the names of institutions of other position holders, but they failed to do so for Shah.
PBISE examination controller under fire
The PBISE Controller Examination came under criticism on Monday for allegedly crediting the Adviser to the Chief Minister on Education Ziaullah Bangash for better performance in colleges.
College teachers and lecturers reminded that Bangash’s jurisdiction only extends to primary, secondary and higher secondary schools.
Colleges, they explained fall under the purview of the provincial higher education department — a department which does not have any minister assigned to it at the moment.
Expressing their disappointment, teachers said that in his zeal, the controller examination went overboard in crediting the adviser on college performances.
Abbottabad students protest
Meanwhile, students in Abbottabad staged a protest against the local education board over what they claimed were faulty results.
They staged a demonstration outside the Abbottabad Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education offices, chanting slogans in favour of their demands. The Express Tribune,31 July 2019
