SECTION – 3 (Discussion)

Twenty five surgeons from different hospitals and different departments like trauma / accident emergency, vascular surgery departments participated in this one day workshop. Workshop was a good addition in the clinical training of the young surgeons working in the different specialties.
PUBLICATION OF JOURNAL OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES
To promote research and medical education, publication of a medical journal is started. The Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases (JCVD) is a quarterly published research based medical journal started in 2003. It encompasses contribution in the field of Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.
Inaugural Ceremony of The Journal Of Cardiovascular Diseases

The Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases is an important mile stone in the development of research oriented society in this part of the World as the aim of the Journal is, to promote research and medical education in the region. The Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases encompasses contributions in the fields of Adult, Paediatric and Interventional Cardiology and Adult and Paediatric Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. It also presents classic work done in other fields of medicine. The Seminar/Inaugural ceremony of the Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases took place on 26th March 2004 at Al-Hamra Hall Lahore. The ceremony was attended by many ministers of Punjab Government, prominent politicians, eminent scholars and doctors. The Inaugur­ation of The Journal was performed by Dr Tahir Ali Javed, Minister for Health, Government of the Punjab. Prof. Jawad Sajid Khan, Head of the Institution, Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Lahore in his inaugural speech mentioned various research projects going on in the Institute. Dr Ahmad Shahbaz described the introduction and working of the Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases. Dr TS Kler, an invited delegate from India stressed the need for research in Indo-Pak region. Prominent scholar Munnu Bhai appreciat­ed this effort of publication of the Journal from Punjab Institute of Cardiology, he declared it a milestone in medical publication. A famous musical band performed for the audience which was followed by a lavish dinner.
PUBLIC AWARENESS PROGRAMMME
A public awareness campaign is launched by Punjab Institute of Cardiology to create awareness amongst the people regarding heart diseased and educate them for preventive measures. A number of activities were arranged during the years 2003, 2004 and 2005.
World Heart Day

World Heart Day, 2003 was observed by the PIC with the collaboration of World Heart Federation at Race Course Park. Heart Festival (Heart Mela) was organized from 22nd to 28th September, 2003 inaugurated by the Chief Minister of the Punjab. People were provided awareness literature, videos and documentary films. Facilities of free medical check-up were arranged with the help of various pharmaceutical companies.
World Heart Day Walk was arranged on 28th September 2003 to emphasize on the importance of walk to prevent cardiac diseases. The walk was lead by the Governor of the Punjab.
Awareness session was arranged on 28th September 2003. The Health Minister of the Punjab was the Chief Guest. Head of the Institution, Dr. Jawad Sajid Khan and Chief of Cardiology Prof. Muhammad Azhar delivered lectures.
CONFERENCES

1st Indo Pak Heart Summit, 10th -11th April, 2004

1st Indo Pak Heart Summit was organized by Escort Heart Institute & Research Center at Amritsar on 10th & 11th April, 2004. It was the first time any major interaction between the two countries in the field of medicine was organized. Since the heart diseases on both sides of the border are likely to be similar the joint Heart Summit was of immense value for the people of Pakistan and India. A 20 member team of PIC consultants and doctors visited Amritsar, India under the supervision of Prof. Jawad Sajid Khan. A number of research papers were presented at this conference by the PIC doctors under the guidance of Prof. Nadeem Hayat Mallick. This conference was of a great success for the both sides in regard to improve bilateral cooperation in medical care at government and public level.
Visit of Indian delegates to Punjab Institute of Cardiology

Indian delegation headed by Mr. Harpal Singh who is the first cousin of Prime Minister of India and Chairm Fortis Health Care Limited as well as SRL, Ranbaxy Ltd, and Director, Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd visited PIC on 17th December 2004. The visit of these highly placed businessman and entrepreneur from India was intended to explore co-operation and the possibility of joint ventures in the field of healthcare and Pharmaceutical Industry.
A presentation and reception for the delegates was organized in PIC Auditorium where both sides shared their experience and discussed mutual co-operation and support. The Indian delegates were very pleased happy and impressed by the achievement of PIC in Government Sector hospitals of Pakistan.
5th Biennial International Conference of the Pakistan Society of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgeons and 1st Heart Summit of Emergent Countries

Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Lahore organized the “5th Biennial International Conference” of the Pakistan Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons and “1st Heart Summit of Emergent Countries”. Many national and International organizations supported this conference, among them the most prominent was World Heart Federation which provided technical support. Other organizations were Pakistan Cardiac Society, Pakistan Society of Interventional Cardiologists, Pakistan Paediatric Cardiology Society, Pakistan Hypertension League. Among International organizations were SAARC Cardiac Society and Associations of Thoracic and cardiovascular Surgeons of Asia. The conference would not have been successful with out the generous financial and logistic support by the honourable Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and the Punjab government.
The conference was inaugurated at the Aiwa-e-Iqbal by His Excellency Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, Chief Minister of Punjab on 27th of March 2005. The gathering consisted of largest number ever of Cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons in Pakistan.
The inaugural ceremony was followed by workshops on Echocardiography, Electrophysiology, Nuclear Cardiology, Percutaneous Coronary Interventions and Cardiac Surgery. In these workshops the format was to meet the experts, interactive sessions and interesting cases for the participants.
At least 500 research papers in cardiology and cardiovascular & thoracic surgery were presented in Scientific Sessions.
