This was stated by the pro-vice chancellor of the Karachi University, Prof (Dr) Akhlaq Ahmed, on Saturday.

He said the BA regular and external exams 2008 would start from Nov 3.

Around 16 colleges for boys have been selected as examination centres after a gap of 12 years.

The exams of female candidates are already being held in selected girls colleges.

The principals had pointed out some "sensitive" colleges and they were assured by the law-enforcement agencies about extra security at these colleges, he said.

Dr Akhlaq said that the examinations department of the university conducts about 104 examinations every year and the numbers of candidates appearing in different exams are increasing.

He said that about 25,000 students were studying at Karachi University in morning and in evening programmes while some 5,000 students were studying in different departments.

He said students appearing in BA, BSc, BCom, LLB, BEd and other examinations were more than 100,000. He said that at present the university was facing a shortage of classrooms due to the introduction of four-year BS programme, mid-term semester examinations, MPhil and PhD lecture programmes.
