Allama Iqbal Open University Students stage protest on campus

Islamabad: Hundreds of students of the Allama Iqbal Open University staged a protest on the university campus on Thursday, calling for the early accreditation of BE (Telecommunication) programme of the university to save their career.

The protesting students set tyres on fire as part of their protest. The students had announced early this month that if the university failed to get the programme accredited with the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), they would hold a protest.

They were holding banners and placards inscribed with different slogans against the university's administration and were asking for early resolution of the issue.

Speaking on the occasion, Students Action Committee President Umar Mughal said that 1,309 students were enrolled in the BE (Telecom), whose future was at stake due to unregistered status of the programme.

The students expressed dissatisfaction on efforts of the university for resolving the issue with the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), saying it had failed to get the programme accredited. The PEC has asked the university to stock the laboratory with required facilities, provide adequate number of qualified faculty for the programme and revise the programme's syllabus with introduction of some new subjects, but the university has so far failed to meet the requirements, the students said.

After getting assurance from the university VC that the programme would be registered with the PEC, the students had taken admission and everyone of them deposited around Rs 200,000 fee for the programme, they said, adding that the VC failed to keep his word. Daily Times
