Teachers Protest Against Govt Policies
Lahore :October 06: PUNDREDS of schoolteachers blocking The Mall in front of the Punjab Assembly on Saturday organised a protest camp on the occasion of World Teachers Day to protest against the provincial government’s education policies.
The camp was organised by the Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) in which male and female teachers from different parts of the province participated and expressed resentment over, what they termed, government’s anti-teachers and anti-education policies.
The teachers’ protest caused great traffic mess on The Mall and many adjacent roads owing to which commuters had to face difficulties. The charged participants carrying banners and placards inscribed with anti-government statements chanted slogans and severely criticised the government. Their main point of concern was the establishment of District Education Authorities (DAEs) while the schoolteachers also condemned the government for keeping them away from the policy making process. PTU President Syed Sajjad Akbar Kazmi, Joint Action Committee (JAC) Chairman Rana Muhammad Arshad and other PTU leaders, including Rana Liaquat, said the teachers were never included in the policy making but they were always blamed when the policies failed.
They criticised the government for assigning non-academic duties to teachers, including various kinds of surveys and even the duties related to Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) campaigns. They said the teachers were kept busy in non-academic activities and on the other hand they were punished for poor results.

They also criticised the PML-N, saying it was unfortunate that whenever this party came in power, it tried to enslave the schoolteachers.

The PTU leaders made it clear that the schoolteachers across the province would not accept the DEAs at any cost.

They also condemned the government for delay in in-service promotion, downsising in the name of rationalisation and reevaluation of posts, consolidation of girls and boys’ schools and dismissal of teachers over unsatisfactory results, etc.

They warned that if their demands, including abolition of District Education Authorities, were not met by October 15, the teachers across the province would launch a protest movement and hold a protest march and sit-in in the provincial metropolis on November 28.

Similarly, on the call of PTU and Muttahida Mahaz Asataza Punjab (MMAP), rallies were held in different parts of the province in which hundreds of teachers participated and protested over establishment of DEAs.

Meanwhile, many NGOs and student organisations, including Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), organised events to mark the World Teachers Day which was observed across the world with the theme “A Call for Teachers.” MMAP Lahore also organised a protest demonstration outside Lahore Press Club. The news.
