Lahore Forman Christian College Literary Conversation
Lahore : September 24: DEPARTMENT of History, Forman Christian College, hosted celebrated writer, Intezar Hussain on Monday. According to a Press release Mr Hussain was in conversation with Dr Arfa Sayeda Zehra on “Myth, History and Story.”
The programme began with a two-minute silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack on All Saints Church, Peshawar. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Yaqoob Khan Bangash, Chairman, Department of History, noted that this attack was on all of us. Dr Bangash said All Saints Church was built like a mosque and showed the harmony of the Christian religion in the Pakhtun culture. Therefore, this attack is on cultural interchange, harmony, and simply, humanity.”
Hussain narrated various things which have inspired him to write. Underscoring the need for honesty he noted that a good writer should be comfortable in writing his or her surroundings. Giving the example of Josh Malhiabadi he said that he should have remained in India, where he was so highly respected that he had direct contact with even the Prime Minister of India. Coming to Karachi did injustice to Malhiabadi’s poetry, Hussain noted.
He said that, for example, Sir Muhammad Iqbal obtained all of his knowledge from the West but then disdained it. “It was the West which enabled him to become “Allama” Hussain remarked. Therefore, every writer should accept and celebrate their influences.
Speaking of major influences on his writing, Hussain said he had learnt a lot from Mahatma Buddha. The stories weaved in the discourse of the Buddha were the greatest stories ever told, he remarked. “I realised that the Buddha was the real story teller, and I was wasting my time reading Chekov,” Hussain exclaimed. The news.
